Mitsui E&S Co. in Japan has announced the successful commercialization of its large marine engines designed to run on ammonia, along with the necessary ammonia fuel supply systems (AFSS). This milestone follows a series of rigorous land-based tests conducted last year. These tests involved the integrated operation of the MITSUI-Everllence B&W 7S60ME-C10.5-LGIA-HPSCR ammonia dual-fuel engine and the AFSS.
ClassNK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai) witnessed and verified the performance during these trials. Following the completion of testing and subsequent review, Mitsui E&S confirmed that the onshore testing met classification society rules and achieved compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) NOx regulations, including obtaining NOx certification.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the commercialization of ammonia dual-fuel engines represents a significant step towards decarbonizing maritime transport. As more vessels adopt alternative fuels like ammonia, it could contribute to greener supply chains and potentially influence carrier selection based on sustainability credentials. While immediate rate impacts are unlikely, this development supports the long-term trend of reducing emissions in shipping, which may eventually lead to compliance-related costs or incentives affecting freight pricing and routing options.
