The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) has unveiled new operational intelligence tools designed to help the shipping industry combat corruption. These tools were developed with funding from The Danish Maritime Fund and leverage more than ten years of data collected by MACN on corruption demands, delays, coercion, and other integrity issues encountered by vessels worldwide.
The initiative aims to transform raw incident reports into practical intelligence, supporting better decision-making for shore-based management and vessel crews. By providing structured insights into corruption hotspots and common tactics, MACN seeks to improve transparency and reduce the frequency of corrupt practices within maritime operations.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, these tools could offer valuable pre-voyage intelligence, helping to identify high-risk ports or routes where corruption is prevalent. This information can inform route planning, port selection, and crew briefings, potentially mitigating delays, avoiding illicit payments, and reducing overall operational costs associated with corrupt demands. Enhanced transparency and predictability in port calls can improve schedule reliability and reduce unforeseen disruptions.
