Maran Tankers Management (MTM), a subsidiary of the Greek Angelicoussis Group, has accepted delivery of the Maran Myrsini, a 156,000-dwt oil tanker. This vessel represents the fourth in an order of eight LNG dual-fuel tankers being constructed by China's New Times Shipbuilding. The Maran Myrsini is capable of running on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and traditional marine fuels, and will operate under the Greek flag.
This delivery is part of a broader trend within the maritime industry to adopt more environmentally friendly propulsion systems. The use of LNG as a marine fuel is a key strategy for shipping companies to comply with increasingly stringent emissions regulations and reduce their carbon footprint.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the growing fleet of LNG dual-fuel tankers signifies a move towards more sustainable shipping options, particularly for oil and refined products. While this specific news does not directly impact immediate freight rates or capacity for container or dry bulk, it indicates a long-term shift in carrier investment towards greener vessels. This could eventually lead to differentiated services or potentially lower emissions surcharges for cargo moved on such ships, as well as enhanced schedule reliability due to modern fleet additions.
