Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has placed an order with TMC Compressors for the marine compressed air systems destined for two new very large ethane carriers (VLECs). These vessels are currently under construction for MISC, a Malaysian shipping line. Each VLEC will have a capacity of 100,000 cubic meters, positioning them among the largest ethane carriers globally once completed.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signals continued investment in specialized shipping capacity. While VLECs primarily serve the petrochemical industry for transporting ethane, their construction contributes to the overall shipbuilding orderbook and reflects ongoing demand for specific vessel types. An increase in specialized fleet capacity like this can lead to more stable long-term rates for niche cargoes, though it has minimal direct impact on general container or dry bulk freight rates. It does, however, highlight the continuous evolution and modernization of global shipping fleets.
