Hapag-Lloyd announced its financial results for the first half of 2026, revealing a significant increase in bunker fuel and emissions expenses. The German shipping line reported that these costs climbed by \u20ac20.6 million, reaching a total of \u20ac1,319.9 million. This rise occurred despite a 3.5% year-on-year reduction in bunker consumption, which totaled 2.4 million tonnes.
The primary factor contributing to the increased expenditure was a higher average bunker consumption price. In H1 2026, the average price stood at $592 per tonne, a notable increase compared to $542 per tonne during the same period in the previous year.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this indicates that even with efforts to optimize fuel usage, the volatility and upward trend in bunker prices can significantly impact carrier operating costs. This could translate into higher bunker adjustment factors (BAFs) or general rate increases (GRIs) on ocean freight, affecting overall shipping costs for their clients. Forwarders should monitor bunker price trends closely to anticipate potential surcharges and manage their pricing strategies accordingly.
