Global container shipping schedule reliability experienced a notable decline in July, falling by four percentage points to 33%. This marks the second consecutive month of deterioration, effectively erasing half of the improvements observed between February and May. Concurrently, the average delay for late-arriving vessels increased from 3.5 days to 4.2 days, indicating a growing severity in service disruptions.
Carrier performance across the board saw a decline, with nearly all major operators experiencing a drop in on-time arrivals. ZIM was the sole exception, showing a slight improvement. HMM recorded the most significant decrease, plummeting 13 percentage points to just 14% on-time. Maersk, despite maintaining its lead, saw a 2-point reduction to 57%, while its Gemini partner Hapag-Lloyd dropped 5 points to 52%. Wan Hai registered the lowest performance, with only 8% of vessels arriving on schedule and an average delay of 7.3 days, marking its worst monthly result in five years.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this widespread decline in schedule reliability means increased uncertainty in shipment planning and execution. The growing average delays will necessitate longer lead times and potentially higher inventory holding costs. The widening performance gap between carriers suggests that careful selection based on specific trade lanes and carrier reliability data is crucial to mitigate risks. Rising port congestion, particularly in key European gateways like Algeciras and Rotterdam, will contribute to further delays, impacting transshipment connections and inland logistics. Forwarders should anticipate potential disruptions and factor in additional buffer time for European-bound cargo.
The report highlights that port congestion is intensifying, with Africa and the Mediterranean leading in average vessel wait times. Northern Europe has seen a rapid increase in congestion, moving to third place with an additional 1.2 days of average wait time over the past two months. Specifically, Algeciras and Rotterdam are experiencing significant localized delays, contributing to broader regional and transshipment issues.
