Damen has completed the installation of Oceanbird's inaugural Wing 560 wingsail on the MV Tirranna, a vessel operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen. The installation took place in Rotterdam and involved the use of two 750-tonne cranes to integrate the new wind-assisted propulsion technology. This development is part of a broader industry effort to reduce the maritime sector's environmental footprint.
The primary objective of equipping the MV Tirranna with the Wing 560 is to significantly lower fuel consumption during voyages. The wingsail system is designed with a tiltable mechanism, which is crucial for maintaining operational flexibility, particularly when the vessel needs to navigate under bridges or access ports with height restrictions. This design ensures that the integration of sustainable propulsion does not impede the vessel's ability to perform its regular cargo operations.
