Collett, a specialized heavy transport company, recently completed the movement of a transformer weighing over 200 tonnes. The operation commenced at Alexandra Docks in Newport, where the oversized cargo was offloaded. From the port, the transformer was transported to its final destination, the National Grid Imperial Park Substation.
The transport required the use of advanced heavy-lift equipment, including modular trailers for road transit and a Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) for maneuvering the immense load. The final stage of installation at the substation involved hydraulic skidding, a technique used for precise positioning of extremely heavy and large components.
