Avenir LNG has announced that its LNG bunker vessel, Avenir Advantage, successfully completed its inaugural LNG fuel delivery to Royal Caribbean Group's cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, in Honduras. This milestone represents a significant step in the cruise sector's transition to more environmentally friendly marine fuels.
The Avenir Advantage, with a capacity of 7,500 cubic meters, was constructed at Keppel Offshore & Marine's Nantong shipyard in China. It is Avenir's first vessel designed for both LNG bunkering and supply operations. The successful bunkering in Honduras demonstrates the growing flexibility and accessibility of small-scale LNG infrastructure throughout the Caribbean region.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, while this news directly impacts the cruise sector, it signals a broader trend in the maritime industry towards alternative fuels. Increased availability of LNG bunkering infrastructure, even if initially for passenger vessels, could eventually support more cargo ships in adopting LNG, potentially influencing future vessel deployments and supply chain strategies focused on sustainability. It also indicates a maturing market for LNG as a marine fuel, which may lead to more stable pricing and wider adoption over time.
