Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) has announced a partnership with Freightquip to introduce Australia's first airport-wide ground support equipment (GSE) pooling operation. This program is scheduled to commence in October 2026.
The initiative will involve a fleet of predominantly electric GSE, designed to handle various airport operations including baggage handling, cargo loading, and aircraft movement. A digital platform will manage the fleet, providing real-time data for optimized operations.
For freight forwarders and air cargo operators, this development at WSI could lead to enhanced operational efficiency and potentially reduced costs associated with ground handling. A pooled, electric GSE fleet can streamline equipment allocation, minimize downtime, and contribute to faster turnaround times for cargo aircraft. The digital management system is expected to offer better visibility into GSE availability and usage, which could translate into more predictable and reliable ground services.
