TransNamib, Namibia's national railway operator, and Kaleido Logistics have officially launched a new rail corridor extending from Walvis Bay to Karibib. This strategic development is designed to facilitate the monthly movement of approximately 25,000 tonnes of cargo, primarily serving the mining sector.
The primary objective of this new rail link is to alleviate the burden on Namibia's road infrastructure by shifting a substantial volume of freight from trucks to rail. This transition is expected to lead to a notable reduction in CO2 emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability goals. Furthermore, the corridor is poised to bolster the resilience and efficiency of Namibia's critical mining and logistics supply chains.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this new rail corridor presents a significant alternative for inland transportation within Namibia. It offers a potentially more cost-effective and environmentally friendly option for moving large volumes of cargo, especially for project cargo and bulk commodities associated with the mining industry. The increased rail capacity could also improve overall transit times and schedule reliability for shipments originating from or destined for the Walvis Bay port, reducing reliance on road transport which can be subject to delays and capacity constraints.
