Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) recently handled its first international export air cargo shipment. On July 15, a 1.79-tonne consignment, consisting of freshly harvested guavas and drumstick moringa, was dispatched from NMIA to Abu Dhabi on an Air India Express passenger flight. This event signifies the official start of international air freight operations at the newly developed airport.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the opening of NMIA for international cargo exports introduces a new gateway for shipments from the Mumbai metropolitan region. This could potentially alleviate pressure on existing air cargo infrastructure in the area, offering alternative routing options and potentially improving transit times for certain commodities, especially perishables. Increased capacity and competition from a new airport may also influence air freight rates for routes originating from this region.
The launch of international cargo services from NMIA is expected to enhance India's air cargo connectivity, particularly for agricultural exports. It provides shippers with an additional option for time-sensitive goods, which could support the growth of various industries in the surrounding economic zone.
