Grimaldi Group has officially launched its new pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), the Grande Istanbul, in Kocaeli, Turkey. This strategic deployment aims to strengthen the company's maritime links with Turkey, a region experiencing a substantial 50% rise in ro-ro cargo volumes.
The Grande Istanbul, with a capacity of 9,241 CEU (Car Equivalent Units), is designed to be ammonia-ready, signaling Grimaldi's commitment to future sustainable shipping practices. Guido Grimaldi emphasized Turkey's pivotal role in the Euro-Mediterranean automotive logistics landscape, indicating the new vessel will primarily support the transport of vehicles and other rolling cargo.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the introduction of the Grande Istanbul signifies increased capacity and potentially more reliable service for ro-ro shipments between Turkey and Europe. This expansion could alleviate pressure on existing routes and offer greater flexibility for shipping automotive components and finished vehicles. The enhanced capacity may also help stabilize freight rates for ro-ro cargo on these lanes, offering more predictable costs for shippers. Forwarders should monitor schedules for this new vessel to optimize their routing and booking strategies for Turkey-bound or originating cargo.
