Cathay Cargo reported a notable surge in airfreight volumes during June, with total tonnage reaching approximately 145,000 tonnes. This represents a 9% increase compared to the same period last year. The growth was primarily attributed to strong demand originating from mainland China and destined for Southeast Asian markets. Additionally, the carrier's Priority service experienced increased uptake, contributing to the overall volume expansion. Capacity deployment by Cathay Cargo saw a more modest increase of 1% over the same period.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this indicates sustained strong air cargo demand on the China-Southeast Asia lane. The relatively smaller increase in capacity compared to volume growth suggests that space on these routes might remain tight, potentially leading to stable or slightly elevated rates for urgent shipments. Forwarders should continue to monitor capacity availability and consider utilizing premium services like Cathay's Priority offering for time-sensitive cargo to ensure space and timely delivery.
