Alfor Aviation is currently developing an Internal Loading System (ILS) designed for the conversion of Airbus A330-200 and A330-300 passenger aircraft into freighters. This new system proposes a departure from the standard practice of installing a large main-deck cargo door. Instead, it leverages the aircraft's existing lower-deck doors and integrates internal elevators to facilitate freight movement.
The primary goal of this innovation is to streamline the conversion process. By avoiding the complex and costly installation of a main-deck cargo door, Alfor Aviation expects to reduce the overall complexity of the conversion. This simplification is projected to lead to substantial cost savings, with estimates suggesting a reduction of approximately 50% compared to traditional passenger-to-freighter (P2F) conversion methods.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development could mean increased availability of converted A330 freighters at a lower cost. A more efficient and economical conversion process might lead to a larger fleet of mid-sized wide-body freighters entering the market more quickly. This could potentially enhance air cargo capacity, particularly for routes where the A330's range and payload are optimal, and could influence air cargo rates by increasing supply. It also offers a more flexible option for carriers looking to expand their cargo operations without the significant capital outlay associated with new-build freighters or more expensive conversions.
