The Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) has formally asked Network Rail to revise the 2022 business case for the Ely Area Capacity Enhancement (EACE) scheme. The CPCA's report emphasizes the need for a more robust and current investment case to secure funding and advance the project. This initiative is designed to increase rail capacity, which is vital for both passenger services and freight movements through the Ely area.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, enhancements at Ely are significant because the area is a critical bottleneck for rail freight moving between the Port of Felixstowe and the Midlands/North of England. Increased capacity would improve transit times and reliability for intermodal rail services, potentially reducing reliance on road transport for certain routes. This could lead to more predictable scheduling and potentially lower costs for rail-based supply chains, offering a more resilient alternative for cargo movement.
