Shenzhen-based Mascot Ocean has recently expanded its operations by entering the capesize bulk carrier segment. This development is part of a broader trend observed in China, where numerous companies are actively investing in and acquiring capesize vessels, with new entrants appearing almost monthly.
This expansion by Mascot Ocean follows a similar move reported weeks prior, when Shanghai-based Van Hui Shipping also entered the sector. Van Hui Shipping acquired the 181,000 dwt 'Ehime Queen', an eco-design, Imabari-built bulker, for $57.5 million.
For freight forwarders and supply chain analysts, the increasing number of Chinese players in the capesize market could lead to several impacts. A larger fleet size generally implies increased capacity in the dry bulk sector, potentially influencing freight rates for commodities like iron ore, coal, and grain. While this specific acquisition is one vessel, the cumulative effect of multiple new entrants could contribute to greater market competition and potentially more volatile pricing. Forwarders should monitor these capacity shifts as they may offer more options or affect rate negotiations for large volume dry bulk shipments.
