DeepOcean, a Norwegian provider of ocean services, has finalized an agreement with BP to undertake the decommissioning and recycling of subsea equipment located at the Foinaven field. This contract specifically mandates DeepOcean to retrieve ten flexible process risers and three dynamic subsea umbilicals from the area where the Foinaven FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading) unit was previously situated. Additionally, a static umbilical will also be recovered as part of this campaign.
This project represents a crucial step in the lifecycle management of offshore oil and gas infrastructure, focusing on responsible asset retirement. For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, such decommissioning projects typically involve specialized heavy-lift vessels and support craft for the recovery and transport of large, complex subsea components. This can create demand for project cargo logistics, including port marshalling, heavy haulage for onshore recycling facilities, and potentially specialized customs procedures for cross-border movements of recovered materials. The specialized nature of these operations means capacity for such niche services can be tight, requiring advance planning for any related transport needs.
