Adam Parnell, Maritime Director of CHIRP Maritime, a voluntary near-miss reporting initiative, has identified seafarer fatigue as a significant and frequently unacknowledged challenge within the maritime industry. CHIRP has recently received multiple incident reports where fatigue played a contributing role, leading Parnell to compile a dedicated report on the subject.
This ongoing issue of seafarer fatigue can directly impact freight forwarders and their clients. Fatigue among crew members increases the risk of operational errors, navigation mistakes, and accidents, potentially leading to vessel delays, cargo damage, or even total loss. Such incidents can disrupt supply chains, cause missed delivery windows, and result in higher insurance premiums or claims for shippers. Forwarders should be aware that crew welfare directly correlates with schedule reliability and cargo safety, and persistent fatigue issues could contribute to unforeseen disruptions in transit times and port operations.
