Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) recently took delivery of four electric cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes. These new cranes are earmarked for the second phase of development at the facility, which is recognized as Sri Lanka's inaugural fully automated container terminal. The addition of this equipment is a significant step in expanding the terminal's operational capacity and efficiency.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development at CWIT signifies a potential improvement in port efficiency and turnaround times in Colombo. Increased automation and capacity typically lead to faster vessel handling and container processing, which can reduce dwell times and improve schedule reliability for shipments moving through this key South Asian hub. This could translate to more predictable transit times and potentially lower demurrage or detention costs for shippers.
