The Georgian section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway line has undergone a comprehensive upgrade, which has now been successfully completed. This modernization effort is expected to substantially increase the line's annual freight handling capacity to five million tonnes. The BTK railway is a vital component of the Middle Corridor, an international multimodal transport route connecting Asia and Europe.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this upgrade signifies improved efficiency and greater throughput along a critical East-West trade artery. The increased capacity on the Georgian segment of the BTK line could lead to more reliable transit times and potentially more competitive rates for cargo moving between Central Asia, the Caucasus, Turkey, and onward to Europe. It offers an alternative routing option, particularly relevant for shipments seeking to bypass traditional sea routes or other congested corridors, enhancing supply chain resilience.
