Zinus AS, a Norwegian technology firm, has been granted its inaugural contract in Australia to deploy shore power infrastructure. The agreement, facilitated by UGL Transport for end-client Transport for NSW, involves installing the ZPP800 fully autonomous DC Charging Tower at Barangaroo Wharf in Sydney. This contract represents a strategic expansion for Zinus into the Australian market.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the expansion of shore power facilities, even for ferries as implied by the Barangaroo Wharf location, signals a broader trend towards decarbonization in maritime transport. While this specific installation might not directly impact international container or breakbulk vessel operations immediately, it contributes to the overall greening of port infrastructure. Increased adoption of shore power can reduce vessel emissions in port, potentially influencing port call requirements and environmental regulations in the future. This move aligns with global efforts to minimize the environmental footprint of shipping, which could eventually lead to incentives or mandates for vessels to use shore power where available, affecting turnaround times and operational costs for carriers and, by extension, shippers.
