The World Maritime University (WMU) has commenced a comprehensive research project aimed at understanding the growing problem of seafarer abandonment worldwide. Titled "Seafarer Abandonment: A focused investigation into regulatory implementation," the initiative seeks to scrutinize the application of existing international frameworks designed to protect seafarers, with a particular focus on the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC).
This project is financially supported by The TK Foundation, The ITF Seafarers’ Trust, and The Seafarers’ Charity. The increasing frequency of abandonment incidents highlights significant challenges in ensuring seafarer welfare and upholding their rights, despite established international legal instruments.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the rise in seafarer abandonment can indirectly impact supply chain stability. Such incidents can lead to vessel delays, disruptions in port operations, and potential legal complexities, all of which may affect cargo delivery schedules and increase operational risks. Understanding the root causes and regulatory gaps could contribute to more stable and predictable maritime operations in the long term.
The research is expected to provide insights into areas where regulatory implementation can be strengthened, potentially leading to policy recommendations to better safeguard seafarers and prevent future abandonment cases.
