US Reshoring Trends: Opportunities for Small Carriers in Specific Sectors
Despite broad reshoring headlines, specific sectors like pharmaceuticals, food, flatbed, and automotive present viable opportunities for smaller trucking companies in the US. Large-scale manufacturing reshoring often favors major carriers, but specialized niches offer…
The White House recently highlighted a resurgence in American manufacturing, citing a four-year high in factory activity and an ISM Manufacturing PMI of 52.7 in March 2026. While these figures indicate genuine expansion in domestic production, the reality for small to medium-sized trucking carriers differs from the broad headline.
Most large-scale reshoring initiatives, particularly those involving high-volume, standardized goods, tend to be secured by major asset-based carriers with extensive networks and capacity. This leaves smaller carriers at a disadvantage when competing for general freight associated with these large projects.
However, several specialized sectors offer significant opportunities for smaller carriers. These include pharmaceuticals, where precise handling, temperature control, and security are paramount; food products, which often require specialized equipment and timely delivery; flatbed freight, catering to oversized or irregularly shaped goods; and the automotive industry, particularly for parts and components requiring dedicated services. These niches often demand more flexible, specialized, or regional services that smaller carriers are well-equipped to provide.
