Petronas, the Malaysian energy giant, has finalized a 20-year time charter agreement with MISC for five newly constructed 174,000 cubic meter Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers. This long-term arrangement follows the shipbuilding contracts that MISC secured with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding earlier this year.
The vessels are slated for construction in Shanghai, China, with their operational commencement anticipated between 2029 and 2030. This strategic move aims to bolster Petronas's capacity for transporting LNG globally, supporting its energy supply chain.
For freight forwarders and supply chain managers, this development signifies a long-term commitment to LNG shipping capacity. While not directly impacting immediate spot rates or container capacity, it indicates a stable and growing demand for specialized energy transport. This could indirectly influence overall vessel availability in the long run as shipyards prioritize these large-scale projects, potentially affecting newbuild slots for other vessel types.
