Maritime CleanTech, in collaboration with ten European partners, has initiated SeaThrive (Supporting Maritime Alternative Fuel Projects). This new program is designed to expedite the progression of alternative fuel projects within the shipping sector. The initiative has secured close to €2 million in funding from the European Union and is slated to run for 30 months.
The primary objective of SeaThrive is to transform nascent ideas for alternative marine fuels into commercially viable investment projects. It plans to achieve this by offering targeted support, practical tools, and essential knowledge to various stakeholders across the industry. Håvard Tvedte, Interim CEO of Maritime CleanTech, which is coordinating the project, emphasized that SeaThrive aims to guide promising fuel projects from an initial phase of uncertainty towards investment-ready decisions through enhanced tools and direct project assistance.
For freight forwarders and supply chain managers, this initiative signals a potential increase in the availability and adoption of greener shipping options in the future. As more alternative fuel projects become viable, it could lead to a broader range of sustainable shipping services, impacting carrier choices, compliance with environmental regulations, and potentially influencing long-term freight costs as the industry transitions away from traditional bunker fuels. While immediate impacts on rates or capacity are unlikely, it lays groundwork for future decarbonization efforts.
