Global air cargo demand showed a significant recovery in April, with a 4% year-on-year increase in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTKs). This rebound follows a decline in March, which was largely influenced by the conflict in the Middle East. Capacity during April decreased marginally by 0.4%, contributing to an improved cargo load factor.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this data suggests a stabilization in airfreight volumes after a period of volatility. The increase in demand coupled with a slight reduction in capacity could indicate a firming of air cargo rates or at least a halt to any downward pressure. Shippers might experience slightly tighter space on certain lanes, necessitating earlier bookings or consideration of alternative routing strategies.
