G2 Ocean, a prominent breakbulk carrier, has announced plans to significantly expand and modernize its fleet. The company will introduce six new open-hatch gantry crane vessels, each with a deadweight tonnage of 65,740 dwt. These newbuilds are expected to join the fleet starting in 2029 and will feature eight open-hatch cargo holds designed without overhangs, providing a combined cargo capacity of approximately 79,400 cubic meters.
In addition to these new vessels, G2 Ocean is also committed to upgrading parts of its current fleet by incorporating wind-propulsion technology. This initiative is part of a broader fleet renewal and sustainability strategy aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this fleet expansion signals increased capacity and potentially more flexible options for oversized and project cargo. The open-hatch design is particularly beneficial for handling large, non-containerized items, which can improve loading and unloading efficiency. The adoption of wind-propulsion technology on existing vessels may also contribute to more environmentally friendly shipping solutions, which could be a factor for shippers with sustainability mandates. While the new vessels are not expected until 2029, this long-term investment indicates G2 Ocean's commitment to the heavy-lift and breakbulk sector.
