Evergreen, currently ranked as the seventh-largest ocean carrier globally, recently confirmed a significant order for five new ultra-large container vessels. These ships will each have a capacity of 24,000 TEU and feature LNG dual-fuel propulsion technology, aligning with industry trends towards lower-emission shipping. The total value of this order, placed with Guangzhou Shipyard International, is estimated to be between $1.3 billion and $1.48 billion.
This investment reflects Evergreen's strategy to expand its fleet with modern, high-capacity vessels capable of utilizing alternative fuels, enhancing both operational efficiency and environmental performance. The move also highlights the ongoing demand for newbuilds, particularly outside of Europe, as carriers seek to upgrade and grow their fleets.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the addition of these megamax vessels to Evergreen's fleet could translate into increased capacity on major trade lanes, potentially impacting slot availability and freight rates in the long term. The use of LNG dual-fuel technology also supports shippers' sustainability goals, as these vessels are designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional bunker fuel ships. This expansion could also influence Evergreen's service offerings and network coverage, particularly on Asia-Europe or Transpacific routes where such large vessels are typically deployed.
