CMA CGM has initiated the first commercial voyage of the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME, an LNG-powered containership that holds the distinction of being the largest French-flagged vessel of its type. The ship, with a capacity of 24,212 TEU, recently completed its maiden call at Yangshan Port in Shanghai on May 22nd. This deployment signifies the start of operations for the first vessel in a series of ten identical LNG-fueled megamax ships.
This introduction aligns with CMA CGM's strategy to expand its fleet with more environmentally friendly vessels, utilizing liquefied natural gas as a transitional fuel. The company has been a proponent of LNG for its potential to reduce sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter emissions compared to traditional marine fuels.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the deployment of these new, larger vessels on the Asia-Europe route could lead to increased capacity, potentially stabilizing or even reducing freight rates on this key trade lane. The use of LNG-powered ships also supports shippers' sustainability goals, as it offers a lower-emission option for their supply chains. Forwarders should monitor schedule reliability and transit times as these new vessels integrate into the existing network, potentially impacting slot availability and booking strategies.
