Collett & Sons, a UK-based logistics firm, has finalized the complex transportation and installation of an 89.9-tonne Hyosung transformer. This critical component is destined for National Grid's Bicker Fen substation located in Lincolnshire. The operation commenced with the transformer being loaded at the Port of Rotterdam, then shipped via a roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel to the Port of Immingham in the UK. Following its arrival, the transformer was moved to Collett's heavy-lift depot in Goole for intermediate storage and necessary preparations before its final journey.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this project highlights the intricate planning and specialized equipment required for oversized cargo. The multimodal approach, combining sea and road transport, is typical for such heavy-lift projects, emphasizing the need for precise coordination between port operations, specialized carriers, and storage facilities. The successful execution demonstrates expertise in handling out-of-gauge shipments, which often involve route surveys, permits, and specialized lifting equipment. Such projects can impact local road networks during transit, requiring careful scheduling to minimize disruption.
