The South Carolina Ports Authority (SC Ports) board of directors recently voted to approve a design project focused on transforming a portion of a 210-acre property, formerly owned by WestRock, into a roll-on/roll-off (ro/ro) vehicle processing and handling facility. This site is strategically located next to the existing North Charleston Terminal.
This development signifies SC Ports' intention to enhance its capacity for handling vehicle shipments, a growing segment of international trade. The approval of the design project is the initial step in determining the feasibility and specific layout required for a modern car carrier operation.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development could lead to increased ro/ro capacity and potentially more efficient vehicle logistics options through the Port of Charleston. Expanded facilities often translate to better throughput and reduced dwell times for specialized cargo like automobiles. It may also attract new automotive manufacturers or distributors to utilize Charleston as a gateway, potentially diversifying shipping options and services available.
The next phase will involve detailed design and engineering studies to outline the necessary infrastructure, such as berths, vehicle storage areas, and processing facilities, required to support a large-scale ro/ro operation.
