Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) announced record production and sales performance for the first half of fiscal year 2027. The state-owned enterprise saw its hot metal output increase by 2% year-on-year, reaching 10.2 million tonnes. Crude steel production also rose by 1% to 9.6 million tonnes. Notably, finished steel production achieved a new high of 8.39 million tonnes during the April-September period, marking a 1% increase compared to the previous year. Furthermore, September sales figures showed a 4% improvement.
For freight forwarders and supply chain professionals, this sustained high production from a major steel producer like SAIL suggests continued demand for raw materials and outbound logistics services for finished steel products. Increased output could lead to consistent cargo volumes for both domestic and international shipping, impacting vessel utilization and potentially port throughput in India. Forwarders should anticipate stable demand for breakbulk and bulk cargo handling, as steel is often transported in these modes. The consistent performance also indicates a healthy underlying industrial demand, which can indirectly influence other freight sectors.
