CMA CGM has announced a substantial increase in its low water surcharge for shipments destined for Manaus, Brazil. Beginning October 2, the surcharge will be set at $2,315 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU). This measure is being implemented as a direct consequence of the Amazon River's decreasing water levels, a recurring issue during the dry season. The reduced water depth poses significant challenges for vessel navigation, necessitating lighter loads and potentially impacting the types of vessels that can access the port.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this surcharge represents a considerable increase in shipping costs to Manaus. The higher fee reflects the additional operational complexities and logistical adjustments carriers must undertake, such as reducing container capacity per vessel or employing alternative transport solutions.
