Asyad Group has entered into an agreement with Moon Rock Research & Development LLC (MRD) to conduct a feasibility study for implementing onshore power supply (OPS) at its port facilities. The first location to undergo evaluation for this technology will be the Asyad Drydock situated in Duqm, Oman.
This initiative aims to provide berthed vessels with electricity from the shore, thereby allowing them to shut down their auxiliary engines. This practice significantly reduces air pollution, including greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter, from ships while they are in port. The move reflects a growing global trend among ports to adopt more sustainable and environmentally friendly operations.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the potential implementation of shore power at Duqm could contribute to more sustainable supply chains, particularly for cargo moving through this region. While it may not directly impact immediate freight rates or capacity, it signals a commitment to environmental compliance which could become a factor in carrier selection and regulatory adherence in the long term. Reduced emissions at port can also enhance a port's reputation and attractiveness for carriers and shippers focused on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) metrics.
Should the feasibility study prove positive, Asyad Group may proceed with the installation of shore power infrastructure, potentially expanding to other ports within its network. This would position Duqm as a more environmentally advanced port, aligning with international maritime decarbonization goals.
