Cathay Pacific plans to inaugurate a new air service connecting Hong Kong and Almaty, Kazakhstan, commencing in the first quarter of 2027. This route will operate three times weekly using an Airbus A330-300 aircraft. While primarily a passenger service, the new connection is expected to significantly enhance air cargo capabilities between a prominent global logistics hub and the Central Asian region.
The introduction of this direct route is anticipated to decrease the reliance on existing indirect connections through third countries, streamlining logistics for freight moving to and from Central Asia. The belly hold capacity of the A330-300 will be available for various types of high-value and time-sensitive freight. This includes industrial components, machinery, electronics, and pharmaceuticals.
For freight forwarders and supply chain managers, this development signifies improved transit times and potentially greater reliability for shipments to and from Central Asia. The direct link could also lead to more competitive air freight rates due to increased capacity and reduced complexity. It offers a new, more efficient option for clients with urgent or sensitive cargo destined for or originating from the region, potentially opening up new trade opportunities.
