Pan Ocean has placed an order for two new Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). These vessels are specified as "ammonia-ready," indicating their design incorporates the necessary features for a future conversion to run on ammonia as a marine fuel. This latest contract builds upon a previous VLCC order made by Pan Ocean in March.
This new order increases Pan Ocean's total newbuilding commitment at CSSC's Beihai shipyard to seven vessels. The expanded program now includes four bulk carriers in addition to the three VLCCs.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development highlights the ongoing trend of carriers investing in future-proof vessels capable of utilizing alternative fuels. While these are crude oil tankers and not container ships, the move towards ammonia-ready designs across different vessel types reflects a broader industry shift. This could eventually contribute to a more sustainable shipping fleet, potentially impacting future bunker costs and emissions regulations compliance. Forwarders should monitor such investments as they indicate long-term strategic directions for global shipping.
