The European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) has issued a strong warning regarding the European Commission's Military Mobility Package, asserting that the initiative could compromise the rights, safety, and overall working conditions for millions of transport workers throughout Europe. This concern is outlined in a recently published position paper from the ETF.
The European Commission initially unveiled the Military Mobility Package in late 2025. Its primary objective is to enhance the efficiency and speed of military transport within and across EU member states, particularly in response to evolving geopolitical landscapes and security needs.
For freight forwarders and logistics operators, these plans could introduce new complexities. Increased military movements might lead to heightened road congestion, particularly on key strategic routes, potentially causing delays for commercial cargo. Furthermore, the prioritization of military logistics could impact resource allocation, such as driver availability or specific vehicle types, potentially leading to capacity constraints or increased operational costs for civilian transport. Forwarders may need to factor in potential disruptions and adjust routing or scheduling to mitigate impacts on their supply chains.
The ETF's position paper calls for robust safeguards to protect transport workers, emphasizing the need for clear regulations that prevent the erosion of labor standards during military operations or exercises. It suggests that any implementation of the Military Mobility Package must consider the existing legal frameworks governing commercial transport and ensure that military logistics do not inadvertently undermine these protections.
