The European Commission has initiated infringement proceedings against five European Union member states: Belgium, Croatia, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden. The action stems from these countries' alleged failure to adequately implement EU legislation governing the use of hired goods vehicles. This legislation was designed to provide transport operators with greater flexibility in accessing and utilizing equipment across the EU.
For freight forwarders and logistics operators, consistent implementation of these rules is crucial. Discrepancies between national laws can create administrative burdens and operational inefficiencies when moving goods across borders using leased vehicles. Harmonized regulations would simplify cross-border operations, potentially reducing costs and transit times by allowing easier access to vehicle fleets in different member states. This could impact road freight capacity and routing strategies within the EU.
