Swiss energy firm BGN has placed an order for two more dual-fuel Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) with South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Each vessel will have a capacity of 93,000 cubic meters and will be designed to run on both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and traditional marine fuels. The delivery of these new gas carriers is anticipated by 2029.
This latest agreement follows a previous order by BGN for four similar dual-fuel vessels, indicating a strategic expansion of their fleet with a focus on more sustainable fuel options. The adoption of dual-fuel technology, particularly LPG, reflects a broader industry shift towards reducing emissions and complying with future environmental regulations.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the addition of these modern, dual-fuel VLGCs to the global fleet signifies a gradual increase in capacity for LPG transport. While the immediate impact on rates or capacity might be limited given the 2029 delivery timeline, it underscores a long-term trend towards more fuel-efficient and environmentally compliant vessels. This could eventually lead to more stable and potentially lower operational costs for carriers, which might translate into competitive freight rates for shippers of LPG and related products in the future.
