Sanmar Shipyards has announced that its innovative dual-fuel methanol escort and rescue tug, named SD AISEMAHT, has been granted full class certification by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This vessel was constructed for KOTUG Canada and represents a notable achievement in developing more environmentally friendly maritime solutions.
The certification confirms the tug's compliance with stringent safety and operational standards for vessels utilizing alternative fuels. The SD AISEMAHT is designed to operate on methanol, a cleaner-burning fuel, which contributes to reduced emissions during port escort and rescue operations. This development aligns with the broader industry push towards decarbonization and the adoption of sustainable practices in shipping.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the increasing deployment of methanol-fueled vessels, even in support roles like tugs, signals a growing trend towards greener supply chains. While this specific tug does not directly impact cargo rates or capacity, it reflects the maritime industry's commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. This could eventually lead to more widespread adoption of alternative fuels across larger cargo vessels, influencing bunker costs, port choices, and potentially future regulatory compliance for shippers seeking to lower their Scope 3 emissions.
