One year after a nationwide day of action aimed at addressing the scarcity of truck parking facilities, the Netherlands continues to grapple with this persistent issue. Despite increased political and governmental awareness of the problem, and the initiation of various studies to identify potential new locations, a comprehensive resolution has not yet been implemented.
The initial action day, organized by Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN) and FNV on May 22, 2025, highlighted the critical need for more and improved parking areas for heavy goods vehicles. The event drew attention to the challenges faced by truck drivers, including safety concerns, lack of adequate rest facilities, and difficulties in complying with driving and rest time regulations due to insufficient parking options.
For freight forwarders and logistics operators, the ongoing parking shortage translates into operational inefficiencies and potential delays. Drivers may spend considerable time searching for suitable parking, impacting delivery schedules and increasing fuel consumption. The lack of secure parking also raises risks of cargo theft and vandalism. This situation can lead to higher operational costs and reduced predictability in road freight movements within the Netherlands. Forwarders should factor in potential delays and driver hour management challenges when planning routes through the country.
